I'd say something like...
Seat Leon or VW Golf (TD all the way), both of which are nice cars, reliable, steady.
But I really like the Mazda 6, and used versions of them are in that price range too. I'd definitely look into one of them.

To get the most for your money buy one from an individual and not a car lot. Look threw your local want adds or on the internet. Car lots jack the price up about 2000 to back a profit.

If you don't mind small cars, the little Suzuki Alto gets excellent mileage and gives little to no engine trouble if given its customary care with oil. (Gasoline mileage + 20 k / l)
It's also fairly easy to fix; especially the brakes are quite easy to repair when inspection comes around.
If you need a BIG car in a small body, go for the Suzuki Every. It is one of the best cars as far as inside roominess is concerned.

I've got an old chariot laying in the back yard. I had a slight mishap when I was playing chariot tag with the aliens. In a couple of millenia, the right parts should arrive to fix it. Best offer.

Your question is in the wrong category. But I would suggest something that isn't a gas guzzler.
