I'm 20 and I want to get braces because I want a perfect smile, but I'm really nervous about it because there is this whole stigma attached to it. To those adults/young adults that wear braces, how are you finding it and what kind do you wear (ie. have you opted for something like 'invisible' braces or do you have 'train tracks'?). How do people react to you? Is it embarassing?

I think the reason I'm so nervous and sel-conscious about getting it is because I'll be starting teacher-training in September and I'm just worried about whether I might look a bit 'child-like' in front of the kids...although I'm not child-like in any other way!

I am 24 and I am getting braces in 3 weeks. Who cares what other people think. This is only temporary, but you will have a great smile forever. You actually have to be a candidate for invisalign. If you are not a candidate you could try lingual braces (go behind the teeth) or try the ceramic (clear) braces. Don't hold off to get braces because you might regret it. In doing research about braces, I found this excellent site for adults with braces. I also attached a link from their site about the different types of braces. You should see at least 2-3 different orthodontist for consultations since treatment options may differ. Most orthodontist offer consultations for little to no fee. I wish you the bet of luck.

I had braces aged 18 - 21.

I didn't care what other people thought about my braces as I knew the outcome would make it worth it.

They are not as big as they used to be, and I had braces top and bottom. No-one ever really commented on the braces.

You will just get on with your life the way you did before the braces. Lots of adults wear braces. It's not weird and people don't really care whether you have braces or not.

Just go for it, or accept the smile you have. It's your choice and not a difficult one.

I got braces when I was 21. The train track kind. Didn't find it embarrassing at all. Honestly can say that no-one ever thought I was weird or anything. I did get some relevant questions about it at times, but not in any way that would be embarrassing. The train track kind works better as it's more sturdy. I'm very glad I got them, as it really is a short time of your life that you'll have it, but the improvement is for life.

Good luck!

Because so many young adults wear braces, it should not be embarrassing as it is such a common sight. I also know an adult currently wearing a brace and it did not seem strange to see her with a brace. She also commented on it to me and she is pleased to be having the treatment done. Remember that at the end of the treatment, you will feel so much more confident with your perfect smile. It will be worth it in the end.

I got braces when I was 49. My braces have been off for 4 months. I had the standard metal braces and loved getting different color rubber bands. I never tried to hide my smile and never was embarrassed to have braces. There were no negative reactions from others. Adult orthodontics is very common now. Go for it - you'll be so glad you did.

My ex boyfriend had braces when we met. He was 21 at the time and wore the "train track" braces, as you put it.
He too wanted a perfect smile. He didn't smile a lot when he had them on - they made him extremely self-conscious. (But he looked adorable with them on!) Everyone thought he looked cute with his braces and I guess that's why he didn't like them so much. (What young man wants to be "cute"?)
Any-who. He suffered through it - the appointments, the tightenings, the soreness and when he got them off, he was really excited. His teeth look awesome and he smiles ALL the time.
I think you should go for it! :-)

At 20, you are old enough to have the confidence to make a decision & stand by it. I had braces at 17 and had no problems because other adults tend to not tease like children, and if they did I would just tell them to grow up. I had normal train tracks. Its not like people are going to stand there in the pub saying, look at the state of that one, shes trying to make herself look better!
At the very least your teeth will be fab after 18 months, and you'll look younger in the meantime!

I had braces when I was a teenager and they are the full metal appliances. Now today they have different types of braces and even some you won't even see on your mouth called "Invisalign". You are young and because of the different types of braces and the technology today, I think you ought to get braces. Your smile will appreciate it too.

I have braces for the second time around and I am 28. It's okay. A nice smile is more important to me than what anyone else thinks.

I dont think it matters to much, so wouldmnt worry. There is a girl in her late 20's uses my pub, she has braces and I think she is really sexy! she has a great smile... although I would never tell her this! Things like braces and stuff just dont matter just be you and be happy.
