Years ago I had a shop teacher who built a lamp using a potted plant. To turn it on/off you touched the leaves of the plant. I wanted to do this as a science project for my son. Anyone know what is involved or have instructions on how to build one of these. I've seen them for sale but you can't enter those in a science fair.

Go out on the web and look for circuits called 'proximity detection' circuits or 'proximity detectors'. They usually are based on the capacitance of a circuit being changed by someone touching an antenna connected to some part of the circuit.
