I'm sure this is a Ford-Chevy, Coke-Pepsi kind of situation. There are a few brands that are top of the heap, really no better than the other?

There's Sealy, Postur-Pedic, and the new kids on the block are the space foam ones (TemperPedic), and the adjustable air mattresses (Sleep Number bed).

Get the highest quality you can afford but try to catch a sale. There are a lot of luxuries on mattresses...such as pillowtops, etc so you know.

Another thing, if you haven't bought the actual bed...is you can get around needing a box spring if you get a platform bed...these will often have storage underneath.

I have a Simmons Beautyrest that I have been sleeping on for about 5 years and it is still as comfy, maybe more comfy than the day I bought it. You may remember these beds from the commercial with the bowling pins set up on the corner and they drop the ball and the pins don't fall. Well, I have never tried that but it definintely absorbs more of the motion and makes it much more comfortable to share a bed with someone else. After several months on my bed, the hubby and I spent a night in a motel bed and when he got up during the night it scared me awake because I felt like I was being thrown from the bed. Bottom line, after sleeping on this bed I don't think I could ever go back to a standard spring mattress. Good luck. Finding the right mattress really makes a difference in your quality of sleep.

Kingsdown is probably the BEST mattress available. The range from firm to ultra-plush and are expensive. However, they are well worth the investment and are even certified by the American Chiropractic Association.

i have slept on a spring air - great bed, still have it, just a queen and we needed to upgrade. we went with a temperpedic. we did the glass of water test jumping on the other side of the bed, and it worked. we have had it for about a year and a half and it has gotten more comfortable with time. i have also slept on a sleep number bed while i was on vacation, for a week. i did not like it. found it very uncomfortable.

If you really want to know? The brand isn't that important... it's how the bed feels to you. You don't have to buy a brand name to get a quality matress anymore.
