A friend of mine is struggling with her weight. She is currently eating healthfully... but (according to her) as soon as she is alone (no witnesses is how she put it) she eats and eats and eats and eats. Then she feels like crap for sabotaging herself. Can you point me in some sort of direction? I have no idea where to begin, what to say, or where to find information. I've struggled with my weight, which is why I think she came to talk to me, but this is outside of my experience.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Hon tell your friend to get to a doc and talk about her problem. What she has is a eating disorder much like anorexia or bulimia. Not as serious but still an eating disorder. 'By going to a counselor she can figure out why she does that. Sabatoging your own efforts to slim down for health reasons by binge eating sounds like she has an off relationship with food. The fact that she only does it in private and hides the fact that she does it may mean she for some reason thinks she doesnt deserve to succeed -so the closer she gets to success the more often the binging has to occur. Plz help your friend to get to a doc for eating disorders -it will change her life in so many ways!!

If i'm not wrong, she's a compulsive eater. This means that she binges as a way to express her emotions.
It's a pretty common eating disorder. Perhaps you could search the internet to find out more about binge eating.

Tell her to write a journal to take down the thoughts that are going through her mind at that point in time, the time of the day, and what her emotions were right before she binges. This way, you guys can work to find out the trigger points of her eating habits.

"Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels."
"Food is just a memory"
"I eat to live, I don't live to eat"
"Eating in not a hobby"

With all due respect to the person who told you to get an appetite supressor, please DON'T. Those things can be very dangerous. No doctor would recommend those. She needs the tools to be successful and the support from others who feel her pain. I would highly recommend Weight Watchers meetings. (No, you don't weigh in front of a bunch of people) I, too, used to be a closet eater, but WW has helped me to fight my demons and win.

well, maybe you should encourage her only to buy healthy foods, and go shopping with her. When you see her look in her cupboards for unhealthy foods, and then replace them with fruits+veggies. YOu can never eat too many fruits+veggies.

Tell her to stop eating as much, and grow up. It is only food... it is only food. and one more thing, are you sure this is 'your friend'...maybe it's you claiming it's your friend. Best Regards- WEIGHT WATCHERS CEO
