Check with the airline directly and make sure if you by chance book a connecting flight or using multiple airlines ensure their weight restrictions too or you may find yourself departing with the correct weight restrictions and then paying fee's at the next airline because they have different baggage policies.

The information should be on your e-ticket (sent via email) or paper ticket. If you are travelling with British Airways in economy it's 2 pieces of luggage up to 23kg each.
If you are not travelling BA then check out the airline's web site.

Lazer gave incorrect info as he was talking about Europe!!!

You need to call the airline operating the flight, and they will give you all the information regarding baggage restrictions and weight. It is different on every airline I'm afraid.

The Untied States operates a piece system rather than weight. You can take 2 pieces of checked luggage unless you are flying with British Airways then you will need to check their site for details as they have changed the luggage allowance on most flights.

It depends on the airline. I know British Airways is in the process of making the limit smaller, though I believe it is 23kg per bag at the moment. The may let you check up to three bags, depending on your class of ticket.

American Airlines is also 23kg, which is an approximate international standard.

Carry on baggage relates more to size than weight, though I've never heard of it exceeding 18kg.

When we flew into Gatwick from the USA on American Airlines, we were allowed 2 carry on bags each. But when we were to fly out, they only allowed one each. So my advice would be to call the airport first.
