Ford's are great, very reliable. Get a petrol one if you buy it second hand. I'd always recommend buying through a garage. You could get a brand new one on finance & put the £6,000 down so the payments would be less. That way you could take advantage of the 3 year guarantee. I've just done that with a Ford Fiesta (although that would probably be too small for you), the monthly payments are very reasonable & you don't have to get it MOT'd for years either, or worry about new tyres etc. Happy car hunting!

If you go to a reputable garage they will charge you more. However, if you buy privately you might not be so lucky with the quality of car! You could look at local garages to see what's around. How about an ex company car - will be high mileage but will have been serviced regularly and you might get it for a bargain price? Otherwise how about car supermarkets (you can find details online) - you could look in magazines like Auto Trader too. You probably want something like a Ford Focus or Vauxhual Astra etc. Happy shopping and driving!

Depends on your requirements - do you want a Hatchback/Saloon or an MPV? As for where to buy from, well if you go private you have less protection if there is something wrong with the vehicle (HPI or mechanical) but it will probably be cheaper. If you go with a garage then price will be slightly higher but the vehicle will have been checked to make sure no outstanding HP, will probably come with a warranty and you have more protection. Best to go for is diesel because of better economy but parts costs can be higher.
Suggest you have a look at links below, first is reliabilty index for different makes and models and second is for reviews and prices.

You should be able to get a Focus/Astra/Corolla for that money at a car supermarket, for example Motorpoint. That will give you more comeback than buying private, if something goes wrong with the car.
Try to get a diesel, as these engines care capable of much higher mileages than petrol, as well as less MPG.
I'd go for a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic.

Look at a used Skoda Octavia, with a diesel engine, makes no difference, buying from a private seller might get you a better deal but don't forget to run the car by a mechanic.

There are many to choose from, the 2002 A4 are starting at even ower prices, Mercedes new C Class are close to 6000. or alternatively you can go for Passats or Mondeos. If you are brave I recently learn that there are RHD Tatra T613 in the UK, they are rear engine Czech built 3.5 V8 air cooled engine cars, very cool, very communist lookalike and very interesting, if you search for tatra for sale uk on google, you will find the Tatra regstration uk and there are I think 2 on sale at the moment at aroud 6k.

I drive a mk4 golf gttdi 150bhp and its a brill car its fast and you still get between 50-60 miles to the gallon i would go for a diesel golf. You should definetly try and get a diesel car they have better fuel economy. I would get one from a garage.

I've got a lovely Vectra for sale, black 02 reg 73,000 miles, excellent condition. Very practical car. Also it is the 150bhp model which means if you want a quick car it doubles up as one of them too, but still quite economic. All for £4,350 which is a bargain really.
