Traditionally, Christianity has always been something of a bastion of Patriarchal society. Would that be true today? Has the Christian religion managed to balance the representation of gender, is it still predominantly male, or has the swing gone the other way, with women now acting as spokespeople for the Church in society?

It depends on which bit of the Christian church you are looking at! In the UK the church is more congregationally female than male, and in the Church of England female clergy in training is growning at a much faster rate than male. In my denomination (as a female clergy woman!) of the United Reformed Church there are LOADS of females. We've always had ordained women......

Now there is a debate that the church, certainly in the UK and the USA has been feminised too much and that could be off putting to men. The book 'Why men hate going to church' (David Murrow) is really interesting from that point of view.

Good question though!

Most religions eventually reflect the society they are in. Christianity, like other religions, have become less patriarchal as society has come to accept women more as equals. However, the reason that society has been patriarchal for so long probably was partly due to holdovers of religious beliefs.

There are two balances.

Ordinary members - 80/20 in favour of women

the church will always be predominantly male as "swinging the other way" will never be something the church completely accepts.

Let's see......... How many women are cardinals, bishops, priests. Hmmmmmmm, none???

Imagine that. Not one woman. Guess the church still thinks women are lesser human beings than men.
