Thai is a tonal language, which makes it vastly different to most other languages around the world (I believe a few other SE Asian dialects have similarities. This means it is a very difficult language for non-Thai speaker to learn. Plus, it has a completely unique script, which, while vastly beautiful, is very very complex and difficult to learn.

My advise would be to invest in a language course on CD or DVD. It's best to learn any language, and particularly one so dependent on tones, via audio rather than written down. You could also try out a listen-while-you-sleep recording, which some people swear by. Try your biggest bookstore, such as Borders, or the biggest library you can find. even if it's not in that branch of the library, they may be able to order it in from another branch.

As for online, try www.learn-thai.com's online audio library (you can also buy CDs). Or go to http://www.learningthai.com/ for an alternative. Good luck!

Go to www.learningthai.com, it's a fantastic website that can teach Thai for tourists all the way through advanced Thai, as well as teach reading and writing Thai. If you're just coming to visit, they also have a section that will teach you all the basics that a tourist might need. It's absolutely free, you can buy their books, but it's not necessary. It requires a flash player for the sound, but if you don't have it, you can download it off the site, and of course that's free as well. I've bought Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur language courses and this one is much better. I live in Thailand and I think it's great that you're taking the time and initiative to at least learn some basic Thai, welcome to Thailand and chok dee!

Pick up a beginners English-Thai dictionary. Lonely Planet also has a phrase book that is useful. As a student, weigh the length of time you will be here in Thailand v. time before you come back again. The Thais will be happy that you are trying to learn and speak the language.

Sawadee & Chok Dee (Goodbye & Good luck)

There are a number of websites that do provide free lessons to common everyday spoken Thai. www.learningthai.com is good. So is www.thai-language.com. Have a look at these site to see how you can learn the language yourself.

I can teach you ^_^

Not charge you at all. Just a service mind because you will travel thailand and stay here.

Feel free to e mail me, if you need someone teach you on the net. But please understand that it may not take effect as fast as you get from personal teach in a real class.

and also please note that this is not related to the money, even now and so on.

I hate people who always trust in the first stage know each other, but after that is money related, :p
