It all depends on your video camera. My camera came with a docking station that can be connected via USB cable to the computer. If you have one that records to DVDs, you can read them with the DVD drive in your computer. For those that are on tape with no docking station, you might be able to connect your VCR to the computer depending on the output available on the VCR and input available on the computer. If you have a S-video input/output available you can do it.

If your camcorder is digital, you can connect the firewire port of your cam to firewire port of your pc. Switch on your cam and put it on playback mode. Run your video editor software and select capture. It will open a dialog screen asking your to select video source. Select your cam as a source and click capture/record button.

The beauty of using firewire is that you could control your cam tape from PC. ie. forward, fast forward, rewind, reverse play , stop and play.

If your cam is analog, you will need an extra hardware to install in your PC like video capture card.
