So what is this new 'top contributor' thing? How do you get it? Today is the first time I have ever seen it.

As near as I have been able to figure it out, from what information I have run across about it, it doesn't seem to have too much to do with how many points you have. They do seem to choose the top contributors based on things like how often you post, but also somewhere along the line, it seems that they are not only checking on your involvement, but also the quality of the content of your posts. I don't know what they base thier decisions on, but I have seen the phrase "knowledgable about the topic they are posting on" or something to that effect. You can be chosen as a top contributor in up to 3 categories. It helps people to find posters that are providing quality content, this is a very large forum, and there is alot of goop out there to wade through, on your way to looking for a few good gems. If you run across a top contributor, you can also go look at other posts by this author.

A Top Contributor is an Answerer who has shown that they are knowledgeable in a particular category. You can be a top contributor in up to three categories, and this can change according to your contributions in any respective category. The more actively you contribute, the more likely you will become a Top Contributor.

It is something new to me also, they always say I am a top contributor, I guess because I have so many points in R & S

Those who earn more than 1000 points in a particular
category are shown as Top Contributors.

For example, if you get more than thousand points in
mathematics, you will be shown as 'top contributor
in mathematics'.

A nice way to appreciate and encourage them. Is n't it?
