A Spectrum Analyser is a device used in RF applications. It displays Amplitude (signal strength) on the Y-axis versus Frequency on the X axis, in a graphical format. It is used mostly to initially verify component performance, and then to evaluate system performance.

It displays a frequency's amplitude (or strength) in the Y axis and a range (or Spectrum) of frequencies along the X axis.

It can be used for any range (or spectrum) of frequencies desired, not just RF. For instance, many stereo receivers offer a basic spectrum analyzer display for the user to adjust the tonal qualities as they desire (often, flat or equal amplitude for all frequencies in the range).

Today, they frequently offer additional mathematical analysis tools for further processing the data for specific engineering needs, such as bandwidth measurements, min/max signals, etc.
