Before you make up your mind about whether or not a 'pit bull' ban is justified you owe it to the breeds affected to learn the truth.

It is true that the 'pit bull' was originally bred to fight - other dogs. However the dogs lived at home as a family pet in the late 1800s and lived in the house with the wives and children of the men who fought their dogs for sport, so they needed to be absolutely reliable around people. Dogs that showed human aggression were culled - that means they were euthanized and never bred from. These actions have evolved a unique dog personality where animal aggression has absolutlely no correlation to human aggression.According to Alfons Estelt of the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. temperament evaluations of American Pit Bull Terriers shows that this breed has a very high passing rate of 95%. The average passing rate for the other 121 breeds of dogs in the tests: 77%.
There are quite a few celebrities who have owned one of the 'pit bull' breeds that Michael Bryant would ban in Ontario: Ray Romano, Don Cherry, Fred Astaire, President Roosevelt, Jack Dempsy, Thomas Edison, Madonna, Michael J Fox, Brad Pitt, Bernadette Peters, Sinbad, Alicia Silverstone, Linda Blair, Humphrey Bogart, Usher, Mel Brooks, Ann Bancroft, John Stuart, Jan Michael Vincent, Pink, Kelli Williams, Ken Howard (Father in Crossing Jordon - his Pit Shadow saved his life), Malcolm Jamal Warner, Stephan Jenkins, Rosie Perez, Ananda Lewis, Amy Jo Johnson, Mary Tyler Moore, Steve and Terrie Erwin (the Crocodile Hunter), Jack Johnson, Bill Berloni (Broadway show dog trainer who has said that the Pit is the breed of choice for training), Anthony Robbins, Molly Price, President Woodrow Wilson, Frankie Muniz, AJ Mclean, Barbara Eden, and even Helen Keller.

I don't think it helps your case to list 'actors' who've owned pits....Actors aren't the brightest bulbs, and I suspect it is their personal dog trainers and household staff who really look after the dogs.

Last year in Toronto, there was an incident with two pits who were owned by a fellow who rescued them from a shelter. A friend of his was watching them, and took them out for a evening walk. The dogs started fighting one another...the man interjected. The dogs turned on him. Now, they didn't "just" turn on him, they ATE him. One pit had him by the head, the other started tearing flash from his legs, and consuming it. Neighbors rushed out and started beating the dogs with pipes etc... nothing, the dogs began to attack them, but still ran over to the man down, and continue to feed. The Police came...shot the dog holding onto the man's leg....they caught the other with a stick rope. The dog holding the man's leg died, but the paramedics had to cut the dog's head off to release the jaws. Later, the PETA group fought to keep the other dog alive, saying it could be rehab'd. Common sense prevailed, and the dog was put-down.

The true problem with pits is ..(1) the breed history (2) It's breeding practises by criminals who breed for bad temperment and bite strength (3) ownership of the dogs by drug dealers & gangs (4) Society condoning the ownership of these dogs by anyone.

Laws are needed to squash the production of these pits by people looking to cash in with the underworld and thugs. Police need the laws as tools to stop crimes like dog fights and their use as guards on drug labs.

This is not a simple issue, as "Aw, the poor puppies!" Special licencing should be made for pit owners, puppymills stopped, muzzles required...and sterilization of dogs not produced by reputable breeders.

I really could not care what someone like Alicia Silverstone thinks!

What's your question? I agree many dogs who were original bred to fight ahve been domesticted into wonderful loving canines companions. The main problem with Pitbulls are irresponsible owners.
