It all started happening on Tuesday (poor baby), and then there was a reprieve yesterday, then today she threw up just a little bit of lunch. I think she's just about over it, but I was wondering since I've been exposed, how long am I contagious? I have something to go to next Tuesday night and I don't want to get other people sick.

My son had it last week, but he was not at our house and she was not around him when he was sick, so she had to have been exposed to it before he started throwing up, etc.. That doesn't jive with answers that say you are not contagious until you show signs like vomiting, etc...??

Oh, and I'm not concerned about getting it...what I'm concerned about is exposing my friend who has cancer and is undergoing intense chemo to it (she'll be at the function Tuesday night). Her immune system is shot and I don't want to get her sick.

Incubation for the stomach flu is generally 24-48 hours. If your daugher is over it and you don't have it in 2 days you should be fine after that. If you actually come down with it on the other hand, it's a different story.

The true flu doesn't cause vomiting, and the most common reasons for that are bacteria infections. Unless you become symptomatic, you are not currently contagious and will be perfectly safe to go to an event next week. In the meantime, your daughter would feel better if you take her off the food and put her on a clear liquid diet, then progress to applesauce, bananas, bread and rice for a day. If she is still fine at that point, you can feed her bland stuff. Meantime, wash your hands well after caring for her, and step up sanitation in the bathroom and keep her out of the kitchen as much as possible. The bacteria that cause stomach upsets are usually spread via droplet, from hand to mouth. Clean hands and good handwashing do a lot to prevent the spread. As far as next Tuesday, you should be just fine. I would still recommend watching the clean hands to mouth rule- it always is the best preventative.

The flu is the most contagious during the first 24 hours. You probably won't even get it. Once you have a certian virus you can't get it agian because you're immune to it. But since there are over 500 different types of viruses we get sick. Children get sick more often because they have been exposed to less viruses so they're not immune to most of them. You probably already had the same type of virus that she did in your life time so there's a chance that you may not even get it. If this made no sense whatsoever it's because i'm very tired and i can't explain things properly. Hopefully you'll understand what i'm saying.

With something like the stomach flu, you aren't contagious unless you have the symptoms. It's not like chicken pox or something that has a long incubation period. You'll know what's up by Tuesday!

Is your daughter eating very light foods and small frequent snacks and meals? Be careful of the dairy and fatty or greasy foods until her belly is back to normal. That flu is wicked on the stomach lining!! :)

You're only contagious when you have symptoms and a fever.
