so this is like a pretty stupid question but.. one of my girlfriends was telling me about this exchange student she was going to have at her house in a couple weeks. He's from Japan, and in the pamphlet she had to read about having exchange students, she said that it said they HATED peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. i dont mean to offend anybody, but i really just want to know if this is true. thanks guys
xoxo

There is a pretty high rate of peanut allergies in Japan (compared to other Asian countries; it's very rare in both India & China), so naturally they are a bit wary. Also, the Japanese are not used to the texture of peanut butter and it's stickiness -- combining it with jelly/jams doesnt help their cause.
It's also a food cultural thing, people in the US probably couldnt even stand the smell (let alone taste) of NATTO!

many other cultures see peanut butter and jelly as disgusting. They have a hard time with the idea of a sandwich anyway but for some reason the exact combination of peanut butter and jelly throws them off. I have friends from India who are the same way. We make them mini pizzas!

I think the letter just told your friend about this student's likes and dislikes- I don't think the letter was generalizing what a certain ethnic group "hates"... I mean, it all comes down to personal taste.. i have not read anything anywhere about Asians hating P&J! BTW, i LOVE sushi and im not japanese... I also know many white people that love Spanish food and the list goes on.... It's all about personal taste and out tastebuds:)

Maybe its not popular in Japan, I dont know. But if this kid is an exchange student, its your friends duty to expose her guest to diverse and exotic foods like a pb&j. If he doesnt experience as many new, strange and exciting things, he might as well stay home.

The reason why japanese don't like peanut butter and jelly are:
1. peanut butter has trans fats, sugar and preservatives which are toxic to the body.
2. jellies are loaded with sugar although it is made from fruits, sugar/fruit ratio of most jellies is 60%/40%.
Japanese love to eat wholesome, fresh and nutritious foods all the times.

Have you ever seen the movie "Meet Joe Black" with Brad Pitt? Your question reminded me of it. If you've seen the movie you'll know what I mean and if you haven't, you need to rent it tomorrow. It's one of my favorite movies. ;o)
