create fliers to indicate what you'd like to do.
for example a car washing service with friends and neighbors. or even a simple barbecue can raise some money.

Spaghetti dinner
Pancake supper
Soup supper
Beans and cornbread
Corned beef and cabbage
See if a grocer will donate some meat, then do a burger and dog picnic.

Go easy on the meat and your meal will cost less. You want something that is cheap to prepare but people don't eat it everyday.

You could do a potluck with a donation box or "cover charge" Then see if you can get friends or professionals to donate some entertainment, maybe a dance or a karaoke thing or a DJ or a magician, or a casino night which is what people would actually be paying for.

You could also do a slave auction or a date night with any local celebrities that are willing to help out. You can also enlist the help of any youth groups or scout troops, school clubs, teams, or cheerleaders. Local DJs, big business owners, local newscasters, big name doctors...even star athletes from the high school. What happens is that the people bid on time spent with that person, it is usually a friendly dinner date or getting them to help out with household chores. Don't send any kids on dates...use them for chores. Usually the bidder has a big chore in mind where they may hire a group to clean their gutters or pool or garage, or they can do yardwork or help with a person who is moving.

You can try a bakesale or a carwash.

You can see if a local choir is willing to do some music in the mall and keep a tip jar, give you the money.

You can organize a rummage sale where you get a civic club to donate their clutter to you, you get all the money from selling it.

See if you can get donations from local businesses, sell raffle tickets and draw for the winners.

Your best bet is to organize this through a church or a community group...so it has a little more advertising power.

Do a buffet style dinner that doesn't have to be kept hot : These suggestions will be easy and breathtaking:

1) Go to Sam's or Costco and buy fillets of salmon. smear with mayonnaise and put in a 365 degree preheated oven for 20-25 minutes (no more). Serve with sloced cucumbers as garnish around the plate.

2) Buy a few boxes of bow tie pasta. Frozen peas. Ragu Alfredo sauce in a bottle (several bottles). Boil pasta add peas last minute, drain. Add sauce. Keep warm in the original pot you boiled the pasta in.

3) Buy wooden scewers and make little kabobs with fruit: melon pieces, strawberries, pineapples (canned "chunks" works great here), grapes.

4) Can do the same skewer idea with cold cooked shrimp and avocados and sauteed bell peppers. drizzle (or brush) a LITTLE oil and balsamic on these.

5) Buy Bread in whatevr form is cheapest and serve in baskets. Rolls, cut up french bread, etc.

6) Dessert can be an entire table of "sundae bar". Costco or Samm's have the BIG ice cream containers. Buy 2 vanilla for every one chocolate. Buy whpped cream cans, sprinkles, mini m&m's, chopped nuts, caramel sauce and chcolate sauce. Set it up and let everyone custom make their own (with supervision if they're wild) sundae!!!

These are relatively inexpensive and defilitley easy and impressive things to serve. It also helps that they're popular items too.
Hope these helped. Goo dluck and hope she gets better soon. ;o)

this is a goodd question but i think that if you have family and friends who love you and your wife and wants to help out in any way possible then they will do what ever they can to make sure that you meet your goal no matter how much it cost them a good support team is there for full support,so what i would do is go all out of your way hire yourself a good catering company that will supply the food as well as the help choose a menu that is eye catching to your guess have them dress in their best attire and depending on your overhead expenses that will detrmine how much to charge your guess and as i say before if they care at all they will support your idea whole heartedly.so throw caution to the wind and go for it......
