England - referring to tart or cake containing custard.

American and Spanish sometimes refer to it as caramel cream.

Some intertwine it with quiche. Honestly, I think that the English were the first to use the term.

I am cuban so any time there is a family party thing my great aunt always made flan (bless her soul) Crème caramel, flan (U.S.), or caramel custard (U.K.) is a kind of rich custard dessert with a layer of soft caramel on top. Both 'crème caramel' and 'flan' are French names, though 'flan' more commonly means a custard tart in French. The dish has spread across Europe and the world, and is known as 'flan' in Spanish-speaking countries. In the United States, the dish is now best-known in a Latin American context, so is called flan; in Europe, it is generally known as crème caramel.

Flan is one of my favorite desserts - but I only get it when I go out to eat at a nice restaurant.

It is a dessert, basically custard topped with caramel. I've tried it and I don't know if it was the chef or just the dish itself but I didn't find it too appealing, which was strange because I like custard and I like caramel pudding so I figured I would enjoy it.
