I've never been in the situation you describe, but have been on the receiving end of a kidney transplant twice. Are you ujable to donate due to a medical condition you have, or is it that you aren't compatible with your son's tissue typing? If you're not compatible, there are centers that do "reciprocal altruistic donations", where someone who is a mtach to your son donates their kidney to your son, and you donate a kidney to that person's loved one; sort of a "kidney swap". This has been increasing in practice, as you'd be surprised at the number of folks who want to help their loved ones with organ donations, but just aren't a good enough match, but can be matched to someone else. You can check with the transplant center, to see what their policy is on this subject. Barring that, your son will most probably be listed on the waiting list for a cadaveric (deceased donor) transplant. Hope this helps!
