I am also a Type 2 diabetic and when I was first diagnosed and they told me to get off the soda, I think I cried. I was 42 at the time and had been drinking soda all my life.
I started to drink water and wow, what a difference. First, you definately loose the taste for the sugary drinks much quicker then you would think. Soda now (reg or diet) tastes like syrup and grosses me out.
In addition to water, I drink tea, both iced and hot as well as Crystal Light lemonade. A lot of the other flavors are just too sweet for me but the lemonade suits me fine.
Believe it or not, once you have have made water the main drink in your diet, you will actually crave it. I wouldn't have believed it 14 months ago if someone told me that but that is exactly what happened to me.

It sucs the choice is pretty limited. Water's the best thing but you can get pretty sick of it. Any diet soft drink (just check the label - it should say 0 or trace next to sugar/carbs) won't affect your blood sugar at all so isn't a problem as far as that goes, but diet coke and pepsi contain caffeene and also some people think sweeteners aren't v good for you - they make you crave sugar (I didn't beleve it at first but I've tried it out by cutting out sweeteners and it really is true!) and there's always rumers going about about additives and cancer etc. though who knows how much truth there is in that! If you like tea or coffee without sugar then that could be an alturnative too. As far as diabetes on its own goes, anything with no carbs (check nutrition info labels) is ok but if you have other health problems too probably best to stick to water. If you don't have other health problems I'd ask to see a different dr next time if I were you as he doesn't sound like he knows much about diabetes! (not to be mean to him - gps can't know about everything, but that's not your problem - try to find someone who does!).

There are some caffeine free flavored teas available. Celestial Seasonings is at the top of the list for flavored, caffeine free teas, and have great flavors. Some brands, such as Lindsay Gardens, use Green Tea with lemon, and Green tea is a natural anti-oxidant, and comes in decaffeinated variety, and can be made into great tasting iced tea. You even get a little "kick" but it's not caffeinated! Have you tried other Diet drinks, such as Sugar Free Diet Ginger Ale? It doesn't have nearly the amount of carbonation as other "dark" sodas. You might want to get low-calorie cranberry juice and mixing it with raspberry tea. Again, you may want to try mixing sugar free Ginger Ale with low-calorie cranberry juice. How about mixing unsweetened apple juice (1/3 cup), a little lemon juice (1/4 teaspoon), and 1/3 cup club soda. What about unsweetend apple cider? Kick it up by adding lemon and cinnamon. Your state Health Department may have booklets on diabetic recipes and drinks. Some of the preceding ideas were from my state's booklet. Although I am not diabetic, it has some great low fat, sugar free recipes. Your state may have a similar program. It wouldn't hurt to check into it, probably through your state's Health Dept. website, or calling them directly. Try the Health Food aisle or even Health Food Specialty Stores, and ask around if needed. I am certain someone would be willing to assist you in finding a good alternative. I know it must be frustrating, but don't give up.

Diabetics can clean out their systems and get well. Would it be worth getting rid of your diabetes to change to water and green tea?
The AMA says there is no cure for diabetes, but they are the same ' unbiased experts' who say there is no cure for cancer, and make our citizens go out of the country for effective treatment. Just ask Suzanne Sommers, who had cancer till she received treatment in England. She is cured, now.
Yes, there absolutely IS a cure for type 2 diabetes, but it's not a magic pill. A person must have enough will power to change the things in his life that caused him to start being a diabetic in the first place.
Quoting Dr. Frank right here on Yahoo! Answers, " A group of doctors took some newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics, and, with their permission, put them through a VERY tough program of diet, weight loss and VERY vigorous exercise. They were very closely supervised, controlled and monitored. About 30% of them were able to bring their glucose tolerance tests back to normal, which did mean they were no longer technically diabetic." Hey, that's a diplomatic way of saying they were CURED.
Second, in WWII London, standard items like sugar and white bread, and extra cooking oil, and civilian gasoline were almost non-existent for several years, and Londoners ate basic foods and walked a lot, or rode bicycles. A strange thing happened--diabetes, which had been at epidemic proportions before the war, practically disappeared--until the war ended and people returned to their normal deitary and exercise habits--and, you guessed it--the diabetes reappeared. That's a true story, and that alone points to the real problem and solution.
Third, we have modern documentation reaffirming the proof of a cure for type 2 diabetes--watch this 8-minute, non-profit video trailer, and you can be convinced, too.
http://www.rawfor30days.com/view.html
And last, if we are so wasted our bodies will not heal on their own, we have effective help to get well.
The book, "One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313, outlines a simple plan to use herbs and minerals to retune our bodies and bring our metabolisms back to normal. Here are the main items he has researched, and that work--
Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate
Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes, and when combined with the proper diet and exercise, can bring hope to almost all type 2 diabetics who will believe and work the program.
Best of luck.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/YYO5F
A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

I drink Diet Coke, tea without sugar and water. To make the water less BLAH, I like to use Crystal Lite To Go packets. You add them to a bottle of water, shake, and VOILA! you have better tasting water. There are many flavors you can buy too, so you can keep changing them to avoid becoming bored. Good luck. I know how you feel! ;-)

Crystal Lite is good. I always add a little more water than what it calls for because it can have a really strong flavor. Iced or hot tea or coffee with Splenda. I prefer Splenda over the other sweeteners because it is better to bake with.
