I had my son's first communion last year...it was in the afternoon so we had a dinner party.
The colors were light-peach and white like his robe, for the decorated chocolate and the gift...the gift was a transparent box which had a glass where the last supper was painted (it was made in Murano-Italy and was kinda cheap 18$ and the box was decorated inside with a cross and pot pourri)

Congratulations to your son! I would suggest for party decorations maybe a few white paper doves here and there, centerpiece a loaf of bread and a bowl of grapes (signifying wine). Gifts are not necessary to party goers, but you can maybe print out an appropriate bible verse and put it in a small envelope with your son's name and date of First Communion on the outside for a keepsake. Hope this is helpful.

We always did a traditional Sunday dinner
Beef and Pork roast or maybe a ham
mashed potatoes
green beans
lemon pear jello salad
a bakery cake
maybe some pies

While there were gifts for the first communicant it wasn't like a birthday party - just a traditional family celebration. Guests were typically grandparents, aunts / uncles and cousins. No other decorations and no gifts for the people who came.

I will always remember my first communion for one main reason, we didn't have a party. Instead, my mother arranged a dinner at a four star, very expensive restaurant. The only guests were my grandparents. Announcements and pictures were sent to the rest of my family. Honestly, all of the serviceware and crystal was intimidating to me as a child but my point is keep it tasteful. She could have thrown a large party where family members would have felt obligated to give me religious gifts or cards with checks enclosed but my mother wanted me to understand that it was a sacrement that brings me closer to god and not a reason to have a party. I'm not saying that having a party is wrong, but remember its a religious ceremony that your celebrating.

Congratulations on your son's first Communion. I would suggest that you speak to some of the folks in your church that are familiar with this sort of thing. They should be able to let you know what the protocol's are in terms of gifts and food and decorations. Have fun!

It will be ok, Breathe!

You can buy rosaries and put them in nice fabric bags that can be found in the wedding section of craft stores, print in your computer small tags with the child's name and date and tie the tags to the bags. You can also use your computer to create a picture of the child and an information label - print them and put them in nice picture frames. (llabels on the back.)

These favors can also be decorations on the tables.

For the cake order a white plain cake and buy decorations on your own, Look for cream colored flowers, a cross, silver beads, and cherubs.

Your local dollar store or crafts store will have some inexpensive items you can decorate with- confetti for table tops in cross and religous shapes, small prayer cards, etc.

Food wise- keep it simple- finger foods and snacks. The focus will be the cake so concentrate on that.

have fun!
