In New Jersey and Florida, two states I've lived in, you don't need a prescription to purchase insulin, but you DO need one to buy syringes. It's usually beneficial to have a prescription, though, for insurance reimbursement purposes. With a prescription, I only pay 5.00 for two vials of Humalog a month. I'd hate to think what it would cost me out of pocket for those same two over-the-counter. But, as some have obviously pointed out, it all depends on where you live. Hope this helps!

I live in Ohio and I never really knew that you could get insulin without a prescription. My dad's girlfriend had a diabetic cat and she would go to Walmart and tell them she needed insulin for her cat, and they would just give it to her. I believe it was Humalin, I always just thought that if you were purchasing it for a pet you didn't need a prescription. It didn't even cross my mind that it's the same insulin.

For most types, no. There are a few specialized types that require a perscription, but for R and NPH it's not required. My wife is type I diabetic and has been using insulin most her life. We've only needed a perscription for the insulin she uses in an insulin pump, or when we wanted to claim the insulin on our insurance. Outside of that, we can go into any pharmacy and ask for a bottle of Humulin R and they'll hand it right over.

All fast acting insulin like Humalog and Novolog require a prescription for purchase. Depending on what state you are from, you can buy Regular and NPH insulin over the counter. Syringes are prescription. Call your local pharmacy and they can tell you the rules and regulations for your State.

I think it all depends on where you live. I am currently in Morocco and you don't need a prescription for anything here except psych. drugs.

It seems to depend on where you are. I have to have one, and I live in TN.

I think so because if you're drunk and you decide to buy insulin for no reason, and you inject it, duh you'd be sick!
