My dad has been coughing very much lately. I can hear him coughing now. He has asthma and smokes. He has given up and smoked again and given up for a few years now. He has quit smoking for a month now due to his coughing. He seems to be lacking the motivation to actually quit it for the long run. My dad is 60+. It hurts me to see how he harms is body everyday.
However, some immediate advice needed. What do you suggest for coughing? When he coughs, he does have mucus. Therefore, It is not dry. What are some drinks you suggest for coughin? Like tea or something? Any home-care? He has been drinking many types of coughing syrups, but all seem helpless. What can a daughter do for his dad?

PS. Great, my dad is angry at me, cos i worked late these days. If anything could go any worse. My mother is not around now; she be back next week. Please pray for me and my family.

I'm afraid your Dad is beyond over the counter cough syrups or home remedies.
He probably has smokers bronchitis since he is producing sputum when he coughs.
He would need a chest xray to make sure there isn't any emphysema going on also. But antibiotics is probably something he needs.

It's very hard to stop smoking after being dependent on it for years. I stopped after having a bout with pneumonia for the third year in a row and I decided that the cigarettes had control over me, not me over them. I couldn't smoke for several days when I had the pneumonia and being a respiratory therapist, I knew that after 4 days, the nicotine withdrawal was gone from my body, but the mental addiction was still there. So I had to gain control of my mental addiction, not the physical at that point. It's mind over matter and who has control over my body........me or the cigarettes.
I quit 8 yrs ago and am now an avid non-smoker.

He has Chronic Bronchitis caused by and maintained by his smoking. He is Dying and that is what you should tell him.

Explain to him in a nice non yelling way, that it is tearing you apart to watch him dying like this.
If he says he is not dying, tell him he is, this cough is from smoking, soon it will change to Emphysema and he will be gasping for breath like a guppy out of water, and won't be able to go anywhere without dragging his Oxygen set up with him. And the lack of air will cause congestive heart failure, his heart will get bigger, and thicken, and will not pump blood very well and that will lead to fluid build up in the lungs (a chronic Pneumonia State) And He will die a little faster at that stage, but it will not be a nice death for him.

He will sit around, gasping for breath, even with an oxygen mask, he will be confined to bed and nurses will have to change his diapers, and he will lie there praying to god for a final heart attack to put him out of his misery.

Tell him this, print this answer....AND THEN.

Tell him, if he really loves you, he will go to the doctor and get a prescription for "Welbutrin" (zyban). This is an anti smoking drug that you take and you can still smoke, within 2 weeks smoking cigarettes will have the same taste and feeling as sucking on a peice of chalk. By the end of a month he will not be smoking, and probably will never get the urge again, But I recoomend doing it for 2 months.

This is not a cheap drug, in Canada it is about $100 for a month (less than cigarettes) in USA I don't know.

Make your presentation powerful, practise your speech, you will only have one time to SAVE HIS LIFE.

Your father may seem angry at you because he's angry at himself and taking it out on you. He knows he should quit smoking. He probably feels weak because he can't; he's addicted.

Your dad really needs to see a doctor. There are medications that may help his breathing. If he can get his lungs cleared out, his coughing may diminish and he will be able to breathe better. Can you offer to drive him to the doctor?

At this time of year, when there are many respiratory viruses and infections going around, someone with chronic obstructive lung disease and asthma will have a much harder time if they catch something. He may have developed pneumonia on top of his asthma and need antibiotics. He needs a chest x-ray to see what's going on in his lungs.

I don't see that cough syrups are going to help your dad. He doesn't want to get rid of his cough completely because he needs to get rid of the mucous. I'm sure, though, that the coughing is tiring him out. Another reason he needs to see the doctor.

Tell him you care so much about him, that his condition is scaring you, and that you want to drive him to the doctor. Tell him you want him to start getting better before your mom gets back. If he yells at you, don't take it personally. He's scared too.

I wish you luck. It's hard watching the people we love suffer.

i was gonna say tea with honey and lemon, give him something hot to drink everyday...

also, give him some education... i've been seeing this commercial about tobacco, mostly on mtv. go to mtv.com and look for the tobacoo websites, give your dad some of the material, and tell him its not too late. also, don't enable him, take his smokes away and replace them with candy! let him have cig a week if even that much.

he may need something to take his mind off that too, and there is therapy everywhere. find out what he likes, and get him outside and involved in activities. like playing pool, or working out. i bet he doesnt work out, and if he was gonna work out he would need his breath... all of this takes motivation and a decision to turn around. ask and you shall receive. Give him an INTERVENTION.

ps, i'll pray for him.

Learn Eft and teach him EFT see source
For cough at night use a sliced onion next to his pillow that stop coughing...at day time he needs to cough to get the secretion eliminated. The "fluter' is a great little devic to use 4-6 times a day ask your doctor. For infection try Oil of Oregano. He probably needs to see a pulmonist and for you ..you can bring a horse to the water but you can not make him drink. Take care...

Try to have your dad drink hot tea with honey and lemon. That works. Anything hot loosens the mucus.
Hope this helps.

I have a lot of mucus due to trach tube and weak lungs. so I kind of know about these things.

Hope all goes well

get your own life, your dad is killing himself and does not seem to care how badly it affects you.he is wallowing in self pity,if he wanted to stop,he could.
and if you are breathing in the second hand smoke, its as bad for you,so does he care about that?
