My dad has been coughing very much lately. I can hear him coughing now. He has asthma and smokes. He has given up and smoked again and given up for a few years now. He has quit smoking for a month now due to his coughing. He seems to be lacking the motivation to actually quit it for the long run. My dad is 60+. It hurts me to see how he harms is body everyday.
However, some immediate advice needed. What do you suggest for coughing? When he coughs, he does have mucus. Therefore, It is not dry. What are some drinks you suggest for coughin? Like tea or something? Any home-care? He has been drinking many types of coughing syrups, but all seem helpless. What can a daughter do for his dad?

PS. Great, my dad is angry at me, cos i worked late these days. If anything could go any worse. My mother is not around now; she be back next week. Please pray for me and my family.

That is so hard, watching someone hurt themselves more, but wanting to do everything you can to help them anyway.

OK, immediate problem....it is a good thing that his cough is not dry, he needs to get rid of the guk in his lungs, even though I know it sounds awful to listen to. So a powerful cough-suppressant is not a good idea. That doesn't mean you shouldn't give him a less powerful over-the-counter one. Pharmacists are great sources of advice, I've found.

Hot tea with honey and lemon.... HOT, not warm, helps congestion.

Coffee, or the caffeine in it acts like a broncho-dilator, which can help his breathing by opening his airways somewhat, although I imagine he has prescriptions and puffers for that. (?)
A strongish cup of coffee is still a good thing when breathing is tight, though.

If alcohol is not a problem ~ one of those lemony cold remedies made with hot water, and with a bit of brandy added, can calm the cough..... and the cougher. I'll probably get some flak for this one, as it is not the sort of thing a doctor prescribes; but it has really helped someone I know more than once. If you are not an adult ~ ignore this one!

I do wish I could help more, I know what you are going through, (been there) and I know hard the whole business is, for you.

If you do go to the pharmacy, ask about "Friar's Balsam" that he can inhale with steam from a bowl --- if he's willing to do it, it can bring great relief!

All the very best to you both.

Just start asking him about his life insurance policy due to the fact he is a smoker.

Get him a hobby, you have your own life to live too. He cannot always expect you to be their on time everyday. Maybe prepare his dinner sooner. Is that his gripe? He just heats it up in the microwave.

Try Mucinex it loosens the mucus. Might have to ask Dr. on this fix.
