When a person says "herpes" they are usually referring to either cold sores (herpes sores on the mouth and lips) or genital herpes (herpes sores on the genital area). There is NO cure for herpes, so once a person has it they have it for life. There is medication to help prevent outbreaks and to help shorten the time of the outbreak but there is no cure. Herpes can be spread whether a person is having an outbreak or not.
Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2). Cold sores are usually spread by just kissing someone who has them. They can also be passed by sharing a drink with someone who has them, sharing lipstick, chap stick and even a cigarette. About 75 - 80% of the world has cold sores, so it is VERY common.
Genital herpes is usually caused by HSV2, but can also be caused by HSV1. Genital herpes is almost always spread by some sort of sexual contact. It can be spread by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact with the infected area (like "dry humping"). If a person has cold sores and gives another person oral sex it can cause the person receiving to develop genital herpes. And, if a person gives another person oral sex who has genital herpes it can cause the person giving to develop cold sores. Genital herpes can also be spread to a baby during childbirth if the mother has the virus. This is REALLY rare though. About 1 in 4 women have genital herpes and about 1 in 5 men have it.

Herpes is a contact-transmitted STD. To the responder who said "herpes is becoming more endemic with the glut of sexual irresponsibility pervading youth these days"...well that's not really right. Some people who have had cold sores ended up with genital herpes. Some people didn't even know they had it before passing it on. And sadly, many people don't bother to tell their partners. It is indeed in epidemic proportions, but it's not life-threatening or anything like that. At most it's a couple sores on the genitals. Once the virus comes into contact with the genitals, it gets in there & hides at the base of the nerve, making it incurable. However, most people with it continue on with happy normal lives, so even if you do get it, it's not really a big deal. 1 out of 5 people in the US have it. Just remember, using a condom does not necessarily stop the virus from being transmitted.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about three years back, when I was still in college and had a dumb one-night stand. I realize lots of young women say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date other men again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/eht2w everything improved.
Not only was I able to clear away all remnants of the hsv from my system in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This program provided the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others too by sharing this story.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

it is an incurable std.
sex with affected partners will pass it on.
like aids one should advise any potential partner that you have it,and they should advise you.
condoms are not 100% safe but better than not using.
if not,no sex.
herpes is becoming more endemic with the glut of sexual irresponsibility pervading youth these days.

by direct contact with an infected person, by having sex or kissing etc. ANd the person doesn't have to have a breakout in order for you to get it.
