Because if you have both, then the Muslim students will be rushing out of class five times a day for prayers; and of course the pagans and Satanists will demand equal time and space for their rituals (don't want to think too much about that, do we); and the Catholics will insist on a crucifix in every room; and the Native American kids will light up their peyote cigarettes; and, and, and it's just too much!

I stand corrected on the methods for consuming peyote, and on the Muslim prayer regulations. But I was raised Catholic and I know that if you give 'em an opening, they'll hang a crucifix in any space big enough to hold a nail. So I'm sticking to my guns on that one. Time for a vote.

Actually there is both.

In the U.S., staff-sanctioned prayer in public schools was effectively outlawed by two landmark Supreme Court decisions: Engel v. Vitale [1962] and Abington School District v. Schempp [1963]. Following these two landmark cases came the Court's decision in Lemon v. Kurtzman [1971]. This ruling established the so-called "Lemon test" which states that in order to be constitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment any practice sponsored within public schools must: 1) have a secular purpose, 2) must neither advance nor inhibit religion, and 3) must not result in an excessive entanglement between government and religion.

Folks need to get it straight, the SCHOOL cannot lead pray, but students, any students can pray during non class sessions.

Are you sure the Christians wouldn't think that they should have rights that no one else has? After all they believe their ideas of a God are the only ones that could even possibly be right.

You are talking about equality which is a very interesting idea since that is a NEW concept for Christians. Historically if someone had ideas or views contrary to the church they were labeled a heretic and put to death. Put to death in a very cruel and sadistic way I may add!

In more recient times Christians in the south owned slaves when it was legal to do so. There are even some today that are members of the Klan that call themselves Christians and justify their hate in the bible!

Given Christians history do you seriously think they are saying all religions or religious freedom should be equal? Wake up they never said anything like that and never will!

Oh my... ouch... first of all, nothing's wrong with Muslims and Muslimahs leaving to do prayer at a convenient time (say in-between classes... they do have an allowable window to make them up in)... Native American kids don't all do peyote, usually it's just Shamans and nobody would believe all kids are shamans, and no Catholics will NOT insist on crucifixes in classrooms, although... c'mon be reasonable. Stirring the poo pot like this is unkind. I'm atheist and Buddhist, but I don't buy into this kind of chatter.

I'd still go for both. And peyote isn't rolled in cigarettes. Peyote is a cactus "mushroom" that is chewed or smoked in a pipe. Our country was based on freedom of religion. And peyote is part of some of the Native American's religious ceremonies.

You are being very culturally ignorant and racist. You obviousally don't have a good understanding about cultural spiritual practices. I was so offended to read what you wrote. How stereotypical and insenstive. Quit spreading ignornace.

Really? Peyote cigarettes
Really? Cucifix in every room
Really? Every other load of ignorance you wrote.

Are religious practices really such a joke to you?

well this is how ur Q is avoided. in Islam. it is a blessing if we make our salaat (prayer) on time, but yet we are allowed to make it up first chance we get. i have to do it all the time. in college i attend class from 8 - 12 i get home around 130ish and continue what i missed which usually Zuhr the second set prayer of the day. so then there wouldn't be a mess because in Islam we know are rules of what we can and can not do. we can make up our prays so long as we have the intention to do so. a couple of times btw i did pray in my teachers office. but it made me a little uncomfortable. because they were not Muslim but respected that i am. she didn't deny me to go pray but i could see & feel their questioned curiosity in their eyes. now i wait until i get home. Zuhr is around 12ish and usually i have to make it up after school...no problems there

You can't have prayer in school in the U.S.

My kids were taught not the say amen to a school led prayer.
I hope my grandkids are given the same rightful council.

Religion shouldn't have a place in school. At all.... it should be strictly individual.... unless of course it is a private religious school... and even then.

The best way to prevent issues is to prevent it in public schools, workplaces, etc. But then you'll have people crying about "Freedom of speech" ... which is total ********.

your ignorance astounds me.

Being Native Tsalagi and not dealing with peyote....that fact alone shows how much information you seriously lack in your thoughts.

when one spreads false truths, they will receive 100 times those false truths. Watch what you sow....for you are the farmer of your life.
