The Human Papilloma Virus...also called Condylomata Lata or genital warts. THe virus is mostly concerned with these viruses being on your cervix as it is a precourser for cancer of the cervix.
Getting the vaccine does not guarantee you won't ever get cervical cancer....understand that. There are other diseases that can cause cervical cancer; Chlamydia being one of them.

HPV stands for human papillomavirus. There are over 120 different kinds of HPV, most of which are harmless. About 37 of these kinds are sexually transmitted and can cause cervical cancer and genital warts. There are also certain kinds of HPV that can cause penile and anal cancer but this is REALLY rare.

The new vaccine is called Gardasil and is made by Merck and Co.

It protects women from four different kinds of HPV. Type 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases and types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases.

Doctors suggest all young women get the vaccine, whether they are a virgin or not. Some doctors (including mine) even suggest women with HPV get the vaccine. Chances of a woman being exposed to ALL 4 kinds of HPV that the vaccine protects against are pretty rare. So, theoretically, if a woman who already has one kind of HPV the vaccine protects against and she gets the vaccine, she should be protected against the other 3 kinds she doesn't already have.

There are hundreds of types of HPV. Some cause genital warts and some cause cancer. The rest are just sort of there. Your body can fight off the virus just like the flu. The problem is that the strain of HPV changes the cell structure in the cervix and can create cancer. If the cell change (dysplasia) occurs you will have to have a vinegar wash on your cervix and the doctor will biopsy the area that shows up a different color. The vinegar acts like a black light. Then if your body does not kick the virus or if the dysplasia get worse they will do a LEEP. This is where they take an electrified wire and carve of the areas of the cervix that have the dysplasia. Don't be fooled it HURTS! From there if it comes back you will probably end up with cancer and they will do a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and cervix). So the HPV shot helps to ward against all of the aforementioned.

It does protect against Genital Warts but if you are already sexually active you CANNOT have this shot. Also it is not one shot, you get three ofer a 6 month period. And if you are over 26 (I think that is the age) it will not work for you.
