Norovirus, the bug that causes the stomach flu, is a member of family Caliciviridae. Norovirus is notable to humans because it causes awful vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Few fevers, mostly low-grade. The virus is fairly hardy and highly contagious.

Transmission is usually person to person. People pick up the virus from ingestion of microscopic, aerosolized particles of vomit or feces (yummy!) expelled by the sick. However, the virus can be transferred to food by sick food handlers, and that can infect the people who eat the food. Oysters and raspberries have been known to harbor noro.

You prevent norovirus by observing good hygiene. Wash hands often with hot soapy water. Do not let people with GI symptoms prepare food till at least 48 post-recovery. Sanitize bathrooms used by people sick with noro by cleaning them with a bleach dilution.
