It's a small state preschool of 175 days operating school year. It starts in approximately September and ends some time in June. The teachers are on an hourly timeclock and they get a paid break for lunch and an hour and a half of paid preparation time. They also get paid for 11 holidays throughout the school year. Winter break is 2 weeks. Spring Break is one week. Summer Break is 2 months. All the breaks are unpaid and teachers claim unemployment during the summer. I know some larger state preschools pay for these longer breaks ...but are there some that can't afford to pay for these breaks? Are there some state preschools that don't pay for the spring breaks?

If teachers don't get paid, then what kind of additional grants and funds are there for the preschool program? Can anyone point me to the right funds? We're in Los Angeles.

As a preschool administrator I can not imagine any preschool can afford to pay for breaks however this is what I do: I was able to get some grants and special funding a long time ago that would give my staff half pay through the summer. This is so I did not have to pay such large unemployment insurance and my staff would be able to keep their insurance year round. My staff earned vacation leave too. I took their pay for nine months and added their vacation pay and summer pay to that and divided it by 12 months so they will have the same pay each month of the year. This is a difficult process and takes some good fiscal management but it saves staff from hardship and I do not have to worry about staff taking vacation while children are being served.

They also have paid holidays and breaks.

Here in Texas, or at least the schools around me, get paid a salary. That is so much a month for the entire year. The holidays and breaks does not matter.

According to my wife, who used to be a teacher, no teacher in the State of Michigan gets paid during the summer unless they're teaching summer school or drivers' ed or something like that.

Illinois has salaried paid teachers. Seems to me , then , spring break is definitely covered.
