I purchased a basic Vicks Vaporizer from Wal-Mart for about $10. It is very simple to use: you just fill the tank with water, replace the steam unit and plug it in. I've found that if I add a little salt to the water it pumps out more steam. I can usually fill it before I go to bed and it lasts at least 24-hours before I need to refill the tank.

It's very easy to clean and refill and there are no filters like a humidifier. Also because of the steam, there won't be as much bacteria. Just make sure you put it on a sturdy surface away from kids.

It really depends on what you are using it for. A cool mist vaporizer is good for croup. I have a Sunbeam, it requires no filters. I also have a Vick's steam vaporizer for sinus infections. It also requires no filters. It helps to keep the nasal passages moist. Steam isn't good for some asthmatics.

I always clean the water container every week with bleach water. Rinse well before you use the vaporizer again.
