im a vegetarian and i'm just wondering if its necessary to get my omega 3s from flaxseeds

think of flaxseed oil as luburican for brain, joint, and organs
so yes it's very necessary, you can also get flaxseed in a flour form, so you can make noddles, or bread, pizza with it

I'm vegan and my naturopath just recommended flaxseed oil, so I'm going to go with "yes" though I am sure there are other sources of Omegas that are veg friendly.

In answer to John C, flax seed oil is more effective and potent than ground flax. Just as it takes many olives to make a little olive oil, it takes many flax seeds to produce a little flaxseed oil. By taking the oil instead of the seeds, you're getting quite a bit more of the good stuff than you would be if you were eating the seeds.

Flax seeds are not the only source of Omega 3s. A lot of today's cooking oils contain high amounts of Omega 3. For example, butter contains small amounts. You can also get it from safflower, corn, sunflower, soybean, cottonseed, canola and other oils, but not olive oil. Don'[t get me wrong, extra virgin olive oil is very good for you. Too much Omega 3 is just as bad as too little, so you may want to find a supplement with all three Omegas...3, 6, & 9, or go with mixing up your oil of choice between olive and one of the others. Then supplement with evening primrose oil which has the 6 & 9 in it. Consult you doctor or a specialist if your not sure.

Why take a supplement when the real thing is better?
Flax seed (=Linseed) is cheap & readily available, grind it up otherwise its too small & tough to get digested, & you get 23% fiber in as a bonus. There in no other better source of omega 3 I have come accross, you need ~a heaped desert spoon a day. I put in in yogut or on cerial.

Well, what about meat eating people who don't eat fish? They are not worried about it because they are not worried about anything since they are eating the magical super food called meat. Anyway, flax seeds are not the only source of essential fatty acids, not by far, that's just very good marketing by flax companies and scare tactics by meat companies who say, 'outside of the ocean, meat is the only source'. Total crap.

Even leafy green vegetables provide a good source of Omega fatty acids. Not exactly a scarce product on land. You'll find that Soybeans, Pumpkin Seeds, and Walnuts top the list of commonly found foods (in N. America) high in the essential fatty acids. Flax is way down on the list.

Flax seed oil is ok, but a better vegetarian source is hemp seed oil. It has a better balance of omega 3,6 and 9 oils, and tastes MUCH better.

It has been found that supplemental vitamins have NO value. It is a HUGE industry so it is not too well dispersed information..but they do nothing. You have to ingest the actual food that gives the vitamins..not the pill

Well, what do you eat since you don't eat fish? Do you eat any other types of seafood? If you are vegetarian, then you might not eat any red meats or chicken either, I assume.
