I have worked in operating theatres for 12yrs (UK & Aus) and have never heard or seen a lung biopsy taken like that. It may have been a mediastinotomy which looks at the organs in the mediastinum. This is the area in the middle of the chest and contains the heart, the great vessels of the heart, esophagus, trachea, thymus, and lymph nodes of the central chest.
This is usually performed by making a small incision above the suprastrenal notch (base of you neck and above your breastbone between the collar bones) and done to allow accsess to the lymph nodes of the chest to check them for cancer.
The use of staples is very common as they are faster and usually leave a neater scar and not as mathew suggests for lazy doctors.

Staples are for lazy doctors who don't want to use stitches. They are used all the time. Why they went that way I don't know. Most biopsy procedures I see are don't with a broch stuck down the air way or the throat or with a needle stuck through the chest wall. I don't know all the issues with your friend so I can't comment any more on this. But staples are normal.
