MM gave you some good links but I thought you'd like this one.

There is a new process (pat.pend.) to make real white cane sugar without the bones. I visited the factory in Louisiana last year and got to learn more about sugar than I ever wanted to know! It's a trade secret so I won't tell you the details (I've already gotten in trouble once) but if the USDA/FDA will allow a labeling change, you'll be able to buy cane sugar that's labeled as being bone free. This sugar *is* on the market under a major labeled brand but you can't tell which bag is safe.

It is unfortunately easier and cheaper to do it this way. Simply stick to products that are approved as vegetarian and vegan, because every ingredient is checked (at least here in the UK) and avoid white sugar.
