Go for something a little different. Kids get all the same trinkets. Of course, they LIKE the trinkets, but adults have to find somewhere to put the stuff !
Try burning a CD or making tapes- Kids songs or themesongs from movies like Wizard of Oz, Strawberry shortcake, etc. You can buy one for your child and burn 20 cds at virtually no cost, except the cd case. There are programs that print jackets and you could really get creative- Jen's 5th Birthday Bash, etc...
OR instead of the Goody Bag- do ONE small toy. You can buy "puffy paint" at a crafts store and personalize lots of things with each childs name. A pail and a shovel, a bouncy ball, a t shirt, anything.
Have fun!

Make homemade KoolAid Playdough. It's cheap and kids love it, especially the way it smells. You can make it in different colors then separate into balls and store in ziploc or buy cheap disposable ziploc containers and let the kids personalize them. The recipe is as follows:
Kool-Aid Play Dough
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup salt
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups boiling water
2 packages unsweetened Kool-Aid (the kids like watermelon and strawberry alot)
Mix the dry ingredients together. Add oil and water. Knead for 10 minutes. Store in zip lock bag in refrigerator. This stuff lasts longer than real Play-dough.

go to family dollar and dollar general buy little toys for boths sexes and candy. you can also play games at the party so the kids can win and that can be part of their goodie bags.. my sister just turned 10 and we still give party bags to her guest... just think like you are five and what you see at the store that will catch your eye... ask the birthday person what they like as toys and candy

How about a homemade Monster Cookie (cooks.com they are yummy and huge) and then some stickers, a pencil, playdough, bubbles, as someone else said Oriental trading is a great place for toy assortment at a cheap price if you don't mind the shipping and have time to order!

When my son was that age, I used to put pencils, erasers, notepads, and of course candy in the goody bags. :)

Go to this site any you will find what you want. Most are sold in pkg. of 12. I can almost guarantee you won't find a larger variety, or cheaper.
