Uh, no. I don't eat dirt.
But lots of people do, apparently.

"Eating Dirt: It Might Be Good for You
Experts Claim the Habit of Eating Clay May Be Beneficial for Pregnant Women"
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=1167623&page=1
(Side note: I am pregnant, and have no interest in dirt...)
"The habit of eating clay, mud or dirt is known as geophagy. Some experts lump it into the same category as pica, which is the abnormal urge to eat coins, paint, soap or other non-food items.
Cultures worldwide have practiced geophagy for centuries, from the ancient Greeks to Native Americans. In most places the habit is limited to women, especially women who are pregnant or of childbearing age.
The practice is common in sub-Saharan Africa, and many anthropologists believe geophagy was brought to the United States by African slaves. It is now most commonly found among African-American women in the rural South."

Don't eat it off the ground. The practice of eating clay is acient so you are not strange. Dirt/Clay eaters will tell you that the safest clay is dug from very deep and you should also heat it to sterilize it.
Its called enjoyment of the taste of clay. Everyone wants to give a name to things that they don't understand or themselves indulge in. Many people and cultures around the world from the past and until this day enjoy the taste of clay.
Pica is something strange, well eating snails, squirrel, rat, bats, deer, cow is strange to many other cultures yet know one calls it Pica. People really are funny in their judgments of one another.
I love the taste of clay and I eat it in moderation because I enjoy the texture and taste. If you have been craving earthen substances you should give it a try, many people do. And don't let other peoples judgment of what you do cloud your decision about what you want to eat.
All over the world the destructive and addictive substance of alcohol is sold in stores yet know one bats an eye but people want to call strange the practice of eating clay. Give me a break. I buy clay from georgiawhitedirt.com its good, clean and it tastes really good.
I say eat dirt and enjoy, as substances on this earth go that humans indulge in I would say that its vey benign in comparison. I have eaten it all my life as did my grandmother and her mother. My great grandmother lived to be 98 years old so I say as the old adage does that a pinch of dirt cant hurt!

My dog used to eat it when he was a puppy, and he mixed it with grass, but he stopped doing that.
If you're craving dirt, you need to talk to both a nutritionist, and a shrink. The nutritionist can prescribe you supplements, if you lack certain minerals, and the shrink can help you work out any issues you might have, if the craving is mental

Wow everyone is so mean. I am sorry I can not help, but I wanted to say I am sure there are tons of minerals and good things to get out of a sprinkling of dirt here and there. I guess you should just make sure you are getting clean dirt. and also maybe talk to your doctor about why you may be craving dirt. I think it is a sign that you are in need of certain vitamins/minerals, maybe iron. I would think that you need be very careful of your iron intake if you are Vegan. Good luck finding your answers, and make sure to listen to your body. If it is telling you to eat dirt, you may want to ask your doc about it. Good luck, Peace

Dirt is best consumed with a mild bernaise sauce; you should saute it lightly for 3-5 minutes depending on taste, then serve it still hot over your dirt (and my personal favorite side-dish, asparagus).
Add salt and tarragon to taste.

The eating of non-food items is called pica. It's unsafe and you need to see a doctor about it.

Oh, it's delicious! Depending on your mood you can add some powdered sugar or mustard! You can eat it dry or add some water for a more fluid texture! It is the most versatile thing you can eat.
