There are different types of trach collars but they are basically the same and just made by different companies. The curved plastic flange usually comes already attached to a tracheostomy tube. Tracheostomy tubes come with a inner cannula that is slightly smaller than the tube itself. This is inner cannula is sometimes disposable and needs to be replaced frequently. If it non-disposable, it will need to be cleaned regularly. Some have a ballon cuff on the end and others don't. They are called cuffless. Some have a hole on the side of the tube towards
the end that is inside the trachea. These are called fenestrated tubes. I have seen the very first ones used called Jackson trachs and they are made out of the metal silver.
Most all tracheostomy openings will close after being decannulated. It doesn't matter how old they are. Once in awhile I will come across one that never closed and these are called stomas. Usually this happens due to infection or the way the trach incision was made but not because it was considered a permanent trach. These people do not use trach tubes but rather have that opening for suctioning. If they need to be on a ventilator then a trach tube can be inserted into the old stoma.
