I know what your talking about, people portray an american lifestyle as unhealthy. this is especially a problem in kids, where the cartoons actually promote unhealthy eating habits, sad.

Actors don't actually want to eat in movies nor do directors want them to eat if it can be avoided. This has to do with being able to say their lines, not mess up their make up and not dropping under the table completely bloated after the 52nd take. So it is logical to show food that can be cut and be moved around a long time on the plate without actually having to put it in the mouth.
But all the American friends I have do eat salads, usually before the main meal and not with the meal as Europeans tend to do.

I never thought of that but yes your right I've never seen a salad on an American movie or TV show.Very odd.
Then again movies and TV are not real life,so I'm sure they do eat salad sometimes.
After all if you believed movies and TV you'd think people here in the UK ate fish and chips every night. It's just cultural stereotyping.

How awkward are you when you eat a salad? Usually you end up with a wide mouth to fit a whole leaf and other foods, plus a fork into your mouth. Then of course the dressing sometimes tends to drip everywhere on the way to your mouth. It wouldn't make for a pretty site on such a paintbrushed chick with loads of make-up on!! Usually when people are eating they are smaller things they can be popped into the mouth and not get in the way of their face.

You said it yourself, you're watching a M.O.V.I.E.
Movies aren't real life. It's a reflection of a screen-writer or director as to what a character is, does or might do. This is insulting to any culture take fictional conjecture and assume it has factual relevance.
You may as well be asking if anyone else "knew" polar bears lived on tropical islands in the south pacific, as "proved" in LOST!
These are flawed questions as they are based on fictional sources, without merit of fact or truth.

Don't take the movies as an indication of real life in any country. Why should we put real life on the big screen, anyway? We see it every day. Movies are for entertainment, not cross-cultural education. Find a penpal or email friend who lives in the USA and find out how we really live here. You could also share how you live in your country, too.
Americans eat salads, lots of them. In deli counters everywhere you'll find "shortcut products" for making salads. Manufacturers generally make shortcuts only for popular foods. Otherwise, who'd buy them? Salads are quite popular here.

Have you ever seen an American salad?
It's a whole head of wilted iceberg or old romaine lettuce drowned in a greasy, sugary "dressing," with some token stale bits of salty bread.
Sometimes it comes with eye-watering slices of cooking onions; sometimes, rubbery cucumber with a lot of waxed peel left on, 2 paper-thin slices of cardboard tomatoes, a token amount of flavourless shredded carrot and/or red cabbage, etc. And sometimes, with an over-boiled egg with a grey ring around its yolk.
Pictures of American salads:

(NB: you can blame a lot on those bags of pre-chopped lettuce. All very nice-seeming until you taste real lettuce and realise what you were missing.)

(Note extensive use of blah white bitter parts of the lettuce)
Much of it is "Caesar" salad, which means "garbage lettuce smothered in a creamy dressing, topped with Kraft 'parmesan,' and cheap salty croutons."

I don't know that anybody thinks they're supposed to be EATEN. I think, for a lot of Americans, it's a little like having wine with dinner on a frequent basis -- it's nice to pretend that that's done, but, really, everybody's having soda pop instead of wine, and fries instead of salads. Still nice to pretend, though.

well, that's not completely true but i do agree that the media encourages a meat eating culture. not only do they put mcdonalds and all sorts of fast food in movies and tv shows but they portray vegetarians or vegans as weirdo tree loving hippies that are only there to be made fun of. thank god i don't let the media influence my life like that.

I love meat. Mmmmmm And you're wrong, they show salads in movies all the time. You just happened to have come across the lettuce-free movies.
