I used to do that. My husband (boyfriend at the time) would wake me up when he would put his cheek near my nose to check I wasn't breathing. Or he would shake me! Used to frighten the life out of me! I don't seem to do it anymore and haven't done for years.

This is called sleep apnea. This can cause a lot of problems ranging from waking up not feeling rested to serious heart problems. It definately needs looking into. You Dr. can refer you to a sleep specialist where you can be evaluated. Generally this means staying in a sleep lab having your heart, respirations and brain wave monitored. Then a decision can be made fro treatment. Loosing weight, a breathing machine to help him breath or even a "nose job" to clear plugged tissue in the nose. But as I said before, you need to find out why and treat it.

It can be serious. It is called sleep apnea and/or hypopnea. It is a narrowing of the airway that can restrict or even block the airway completely. A machine called CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) is used while sleeping to keep the airway open. Sleep apnea can be linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and several other health problems. See a doctor and have a sleep study done ASAP!!
