No wedding police will come and arrest you. You can do whatever you want. But, you'll have serious problems with melt, so be sure to cover that with the onsite people. And, be sure to do it up so that it doesn't have the feel of a 5 year old's birthday cake.

Yes you can. However logistically, it can get a little crazy.
Usually the wedding cake sits out during the reception until you cut it. It will take some muscles if you decide to leave it in the freezer until you're ready so you can either:
1. Keep in the freezer until you're ready, take out before your first dance and immediately after your first dance cut that cake and let that sucker defrost further.
2. Have an individual ice cream cake for each table and have your servers cut them simultaneously. If we cut a large ice cream cake, I swear by the time we get to table 15, it will be a soupy mess.
3. Only serve your wedding party ice cream cake and your other guests something more stable.
Coldstone Creamery is great, but it will melt faster than you say "congratulations on your wedding".
You could give out gift certificates to Coldstone Creamery if your heart is set on them enjoying some sort of ice cream.

It is your wedding have whatever YOU want! I wouldn't get a huge one, because you won't be able to display an ice cream cake, so maybe do a small regular cake and a small ice cream cake and give your guests the choice. You don't want the ice cream soup all over your dress when you cut the cake and feed it to the groom.

Excellent question! I'm planning my wedding for next April, and one of the things my husband-to-be suggested is having Ice Cream Cake at the reception. I've contacted Dairy Queen, and their 12X16 sheet cakes serve up to 35 people. Each cake costs 29.99. Including tax, the total cost ends up being less than $1 per person. I've discussed this with my caterer, who has no problem with cutting and serving both ice cream and baked cake, depending on guest preference. I think it will work out well, but make sure your caterer approves it first, make sure there is enough storage room and make sure your cake is frosted. You do not necessarily need to have the cake DECORATED..especially since you will not have it on display...but you will want to make sure it is frosted, the frosting helps insulate the cake to keep it from melting too quickly. (This information came from the owner of my local Dairy Queen, the resident Cake maker).

Hey it's your day! Do YOUR thing! If I was a guest, I think it would be fun and original for an ice cream wedding cake, especially from Coldstone!

Yes you can but you must make sure that the caterer is able to oblige with the cutting and serving as this will depend on how large your reception is. I agree with the person who suggested that when the cake arrives that it be cut, place on the plates and kept in a freezer until ready to serve. The problem however is that the caterer may not have the freezer space to do so.
Therefore it is imperative that you discuss your wishes with your caterer and how best to serve your cake without it becoming soup by the time it reaches the table.
Good luck and 'happy wedding!'

Girl! It is your day, your wedding...go ahead and do what your heart tells you. I would love to see ice cream cake at a wedding, instead of the traditional boring white cake. I don't know about smashing the ice cream in each others face though he he! Congrats!!!

I LOVE ice cream cake, but depending upon the type of crowd that will be at your wedding, it may be taken the wrong way. There is something VERY casual and unsophisticated about it. But, if your wedding is very laid back and this is the type of crowd that will be there, go for it. But, if you have socialite friends or colleagues you are trying to impress, save the ice cake for a birthday party.

My sister served Ice Cream Cake for her wedding cake and it went over fabulous. They did a big ceremony about it. We live in Chicago and they served "Rainbow Cone" ice cream cake. Its do die for if you like ice cream. When the cake arrived they had to cut it right there. Then the kitchen had to store it in their freezer until it was time for dessert. As long as you can make the arrangements with your hall it should be fine.
