Snoring is typically a sign of breathing problems, and an indication that you aren't getting a good night sleep. There is a related problem called "sleep apnea" which you can read up on, which affects millions of americans.

Snoring is complicated because there are so many factors that can make it hard for you to breathe. A common factor is a flap of skin that people must have an operation to remove. Other factors can be your bed (how much support it gives), weight (heavy people have more weight on their lungs which makes it harder to breathe when laying down).

There are special nose strips which are adhesive "springs" which use tension to flare the nostrils and eliminate this problem (blocked nasal passage), and get more air.

Sleep apnea, which is accompanied by very heavy snoring, is remedied by a machine with a face mask and tubes that go into your nostrils. It provides a constant airflow (and actually works a lot of the time if you can stand going to sleep this way).

Eliminating snoring will help you get a better night's sleep which will improve your health and mental facilities. However, it is a somewhat complex problem so a certain amount of trial, effort and patience is required on your part to solve it. Good Luck!

Research has shown that a whopping one in four people suffer from snoring. If that weren’t amazing enough, most of those afflicted believe there is nothing to be done for their condition. They don’t realize that a good night’s sleep is within their grasp. Some people are giving a new product called Snorezip a try, and are having great results. Snorezip was developed to increase oxygen flow and reduce mucus. When oxygen flow is increased and mucus reduced, it has been proven that the incidence of snoring will also be greatly reduced, if not eliminated. This product may be just the thing to get those afflicted with snoring on the road to a restful sleep. Snoring is not just an annoying habit, but can seriously threaten your health. Doctors claim that patients who snore are more likely to be fatigued, and are more susceptible to life threatening conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Snoring also increases the incidence of high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. Snorezip, with its proven record of reducing incidence of snoring could help reduce this risk. SnoreZip is very affordable and easy to use. Most snoring remedies involve the use of uncomfortable masks that must be worn at night. The sheer discomfort of these masks is enough to make most sufferers abandon such a program long before there is any benefit. Since SnoreZip is administered as an oral spray, there’s no excuse not to give it a try. Just spray SnoreZip into your mouth before you go to bed, and you could be minutes away from a good night’s sleep! Snoring is very serious problem that is often taken much to lightly. But look at the possible problems that snoring can cause: impotence, depression, lack of sleep, Relationship and marital discord, Heart attack, stroke, or even death. After anesthesia, when patients still very sleepy, a simple way to open up the airway is to put the patient on his or her side, the lateral position, sometimes called the "recovery position".

Otherwise, the prevention of snoring involves getting a sleep study, possibly using a "CPAP" machine that uses a mask over the nose to provide positive pressure that keeps the airway open, or to have certain types of surgery. In extreme cases I have even seen patients with "mini-tracheostomies".

Weight loss may help. Snoring is not a harmless affliction. It can be associated with periods of very low levels of oxygen in the lungs which over time causes strain on the heart and cardiac disturbances.

There are many, many causes of snoring. This can include a recessed jaw line (making the throat area smaller), being overweight = more infringement on the oropharynx (throat area), a large uvula (hangy ball thing in the back of your throat), large tonsils, obstructed nasal passages, lung diseases, sleep apnea, and more. Please see your doctor as some of these can be very serious. The right treatment/prevention is based on the exact cause, so you need to determine exactly what that is. Best of luck.

"SA16" has the most correct answer to your question. Treatment depends on cause! Whoever it is who snores needs to have the snoring evaluated by a doctor. Any diagnostic studies ordered, which includes sleep studies (polysomnography) and referrals to specialists will be based on the initial evaluation.

Lose weight, Don't sleep on your back, Use nasal elastoplast.....If you consisitantly get a poor nights sleep maybe you need a referral from your GP to query sleep apnoea...this can be resolved with a CPAP machine (Continious Positive Airway Pressure)., to prevent periods of breath holding (apnoea).
