It is just "marketing speak", isn't it? A bought shepherd's pie does not have any lamb in it these days, does it? So it is almost misrepresentative to associate it with shepherds! Hence the rebranding as a cottage pie. And cottage dwellers NEVER owned a cow! The most they had was a pig and even that usually went to pay the rent, so all they had left was the lard!!!

I may be wrong here given the consensus of other answerers that both contain meat, but some old(ish) recipes make shepherd's pie with pulses, notably lentils, instead of meat. The point is that a shepherd could eat it without diminishing his flock!

So cottage pie is the meat version, whether lamb or beef? Best you can eat? Take your choice!

Shepherds pie is made with lamb and cottage pie is made with beef. Take your pick sunshine. How shepherds pie got it's name is fairly self explanatory but how cottage pie got it's name has nothing to do with the activities of certain individuals.

"Shepherd's pie is a traditional British dish that consists of a bottom layer of minced (ground) lamb in gravy covered with mashed potato and (often) a layer of cheese. It is a favourite dish of institutional cooks keen on feeding large groups of people."-Source:Wikipedia

"Cottage Pie is a variation on Shepherds' pie that is based on minced (ground) beef rather than lamb or mutton. Cottage pies are often available in Australia as a standard Meat pie manufactured with a layer of mashed potato rather than a top crust."-Source:Wikipedia

really know which one tastes better because I've never tasted one.

Shepherds pie is made from lamb, onions, carrot, and topped with mashed potato. Cottage pie is the same but made with beef instead of lamb.

Both are difficult to make these days. You might get away with the odd shepherd, but cottages tend to be Grade II listed. If you live in a remote area start with policeman pie and work up.

Shepherds pie was oriiginally made from an old shepherd called Sam Picklton in 1855. Cottage pie contains part of his old farmhouse. Both taste equally revolting. Hope this helps.
