Caffine and nicotine can affect your blood sugar levels and tell your body to release insulin. This then brings about symptoms. Try cutting out cigarettes and trying decaff.

I'm insulin dependant diabetic.
Living now is much easier than in the past.
If you do not like cooking. Go to the frozen foods section of your store. Buy Lean Cusine, Weight Watchers or some of the many diet frozen foods. They are healthy, complete and only take a short time in the micro wave.
As a diabetic your immune system does not work well.
Therefore you can get all sorts of illness.
e.g. the sugar literally thickens your blood. My doctor stirred sugar in water and showed the yucky sludge in ones blood. This causes heart problems. Caffeine (in tea, coffee and chocolate ) are ALL bad for your heart and kidneys. Read other answer for why smoking is bad.
Diabetes is an all round / lifestyle illness where you need to take care of your total health
[if you don't you can go blind, lose your leg, have heart atacks etc]

OK, here's a new doctor for you--

I realize that conventional health care is necessary and appropriate. That having been said, there are also many things WE can do to overcome type II diabetes, and improve life as a Type I diabetic. I've been researching alternative medicine, and the amount of help that's available to diabetics is amazing.

Natural remedies are quite effective, and include:

Cinnamon
Bitter Melon
Gymnema Sylvestre
Nopal cactus
American Ginseng
Fenugreek
Chromium picolinate

Cinnamon regulates glucose, and has a polyphenol compound called MHCP that mimics insulin and activates cell receptor sites. A quarter teaspoon twice daily makes a difference. Fenugreek increases blood flow and inhibits the growth of infectious organisms. Everything on the list has a use in fighting diabetes. Learn how to use these herbs and don't fall victim to diabetes needlessly. You can find out about about them on line, or in a book I read cover to cover--

"One Son's Quest for the Cause and Cure of Diabetes", ISBN 7890766313

The author, a doctor, lost his mother to diabetes and spent the next 20 years finding a way to overcome it. My brother was dying of diabetes, and I was just starting to need insulin when we came across this definitive work which came out in February 2005. We both lead mostly normal lives now. It's a life saver, and the best money you'll ever spend on the subject if you decide to go that way.
You might want to check Abe Books, Alibri's, or Amazon.com for a good used copy cheap. I bought mine new, and I think it was about $35. I don't get any money from anybody for telling you this--just want to help, and the techniques in this book is what made the difference for me and mine. Best of luck.

Just recently found this 8-minute non-profit video http://www.rawfor30days.com/view.html , about diabetes diet. Click on the link, then click 'View Windows Media' to watch it.You'll be glad you saw it.

Pinky, You didn't state if you were diabetic or what type and if your on insulin or not.

So I'll assume your a type 2, not on insulin.....

Some studies have shown the caffeine stimulates your pancreas to produce more insulin, that could be one cause.

Smoking weakens the walls of your blood vessels making you more susceptible to high blood pressure and stroke. You also need to learn how to eat and what to eat better than you have to avoid hypoglycemic episodes, deli meats should be off limits, there loaded with bad fats. You may want to carry packets crackers for the carbs. you need.

You need to eat 3 high protein meals a day and a high protein snack in between each meal and at bedtime. It does not have to pack on the pounds as you say as eggs are high protein and good for breakfast, for lunch a peanut butter sandwhich or cheese sandwhich on wheat bread is good along with some fresh fruit or veggies, Supper you can do fish or skinless chicken or whatever meat you enjoy as meat has lots of protein. For snacks think low fat yogurt, sugar free puddings, string cheese, crackers with cheese or peanut butter. Consider using low fat cheese. Be sure to keep glucose tabs on hand for low blood sugar episodes or candy bars and regular soda but be sure to follow up with protein so you dont bottom out again. The main thing is to eat high protein, low carb for your meals and snacks to help keep your blood sugar more level.

Meat is not going to help you. You're hypoglycemic, going low, so what you need is complex carbs. Juice is the best. It raises you quick and keeps your sugar up.

both caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and will burn up your blood sugar faster, as well they are both appetite suppressants and can lead you to think you don;t need to eat when you do.By the way I thought 27 was HIGH for blood sugar, you may want to be tested for diabetes.
