Here's a quick answer-- call the local grocery store, & ask for someone to get a box and read off the ingredients to you. I've done it before...

The non-vegan ingredients in such cakes are usually butter, eggs and milk. White flour may be a nutritional loser, but it is not an animal product. White sugar is a close call. It is normally considered vegan, but actually it is often whitened in a process that uses animal bones. Try using other sweeteners such as rice syrup. Use vegan soy margarine in place of shortening or butter, soy milk in place of dairy, milk and Ener-G Egg Replacer (available in natural foods stores) for eggs.

You didn't say which cake mix I am sure its different for the chocolate compared to the white or yellow. Did you know you don't have to make cake mix with eggs or oil?
Take one box of chocolate cake mix add one can of diet coke and mix and bake as usual.. it becomes a light 3 point cake that dieters can enjoy.

It used to be *accidentally vegan,* but many veg websites have confirmed that it is no longer safe. They could still be wrong, so it never hurts to look.

:(

Ghirardelli chocolate chocolate chip muffin mix is still vegan though. I'm sure you could make goodness from that.

EDIT- According to the shabbot shalom site, many believe they are planning on removing the dairy again. That updade was on 11/06, so it may still be possible.

Lemme check...

It has non-fat dry milk, but everything else seems okay. And you can make it egg-free by using 12 ounces of soda instead of the eggs, oil and water.
