Considering the age of HIV, it seems odd.

I've seen ads for condoms on MTV, but your point is well taken. Regarding feminine napkins, I think they are not so controversial b/c for a large portion of the female population, such items aren't discretionary. And their ads are so vague that you would hardly know what the product is.
I think the relative lack of condom ads is a combination of self-censorship by condom makers and resistance on behalf of TV networks.
However, since both Viagra and condoms are used to facilitate intercourse and using them is more of a choice, and in the US there is so much conservatism, it is surprising that there isn't more of a backlash to ads for impotence pills. But these products are made by huge drug companies, which have a massive amount of clout in Washington--they're the same folks who brought you Bush's medicare prescription drug boondoggle. So if they want to go on TV and show the guy throwing the football through the tire swing and talk about erections lasting 4 hours, no one's going to stop them.

Trojan commercials are the only condom ads I see. And they don't flat out say condoms. It's mainly like two people hugging and being close and they said protection is everything or something like that and then show the trojan screen. I suppose if you didn't know about Trojan condoms it might have no meaning for you but *shrugs*.

I can see several 'family' groups complaining to the FCC if there were more condom commercials on tv.
