1. If you are a healthy young individual with a blood cholesterol just above the upper limit of normal , I would advocate a lowering control by diet only . This is the avoidance of animal fats and saturated ones ; to consume lots of vegetables and fruits. Physical exercise definitely helps in lowering cholesterol

2.But if the cholesterol is raised to a pathological level and/ or the individual has had a circulatory problem related to hypercholesterolaemia or has a strong family history of morbidity / mortality related to it, i will not hesitate to prescribed high dosage of statins + strict dieting. These are situations where there may be a race against time.

3.In between these two extremes one can vary the recommendations.

I assume you are trying to lower your cholesterol without drugs. If your cholesterol and triglyceride levels are high because of your diet then a low fat diet with lower cholesterol food and an increase in dietary fiber will be a help.

I want to caution you though. Cholesterol levels and the blood levels of your High Density and Low Density Lipids as well triglyceride levels should be monitored. If significant changes in your diet do not help decrease these levels, you are still at a higher risk for Coronary Artery disease and that means it may be beneficial to take a medication that will help you lower your cholesterol.

As always, talk to your physician. A good practitioner will always start out trying the simplest solution first and will be able to give you help with the diet.

Good luck and good eating!

Yep, this can be done. Drugs work the best, but you can lower cholesterol by (1) eating more fiber ( it binds cholesterol in the gut), (2) eating more oils and unsaturated fats, (3) eating less hard fats (saturated fats).
