The problem with this is that human come into contact with the objects on a regular basis, thus lice are able to feed.

I researched this for you and from the words of Wikipedia: Lice can survive in bedding and clothing, so these items must be treated, sterilized, or contact with them must be avoided for two weeks, after which time any lice will have died.

That's the best answer.

Yeah, not a great situation. Once you get rid of them if they are on your body, you need to wash EVERYTHING in hot water. Your entire bed, and perhaps buy new pillows. Vacuum everything and even maybe consider a carpet cleaner at a drugstore. They can survive as long as they have their needs met. They can live off dead skin which is everywhere in most houses, and feed off a dirty environment. If you clean really well and stay tidy for a few months they should be completely gone. Using disinfecting spray on table surfaces, febreeze on your bed during the day may help keep those pests away. You must wash everything in scalding hot water to kill the ones in your bed and towels. Do this every 3 - 4 days for the first week then once a week should be enough.
