You know alot of Fire fighters go alot to an american Legion club, Does your Dad have a club he enjoys? You can go to his favorite club and make arrangemnts for a surprise party, and have a band or records , a D.J. Give him a fake invite that a friend is getting married, and mail it to him, he will think well, its a wedding, And when he goes it will be for him, Gift Ideas will be care packages, the Decor will be his pictures in newpapers clippings, his graduation, And only invite his family and maybe some of his long time friends, Maybe make arrangements with a catered cook, and have submarine sandwhiches, with mac salad poto salad, stuff like that, or get together with the husbands wives, and they will bring a covered dish, have a Barbeque, for dinner afterwards, like a big barbeque with ribs and stuff, in your back yeard

SO firemen are going to like to DRINK and EAT and laugh. Those are the key items. Enlist their help too- your dad probably taught most of them and mentored them. Have them man the food, the music, and a few to help clean up.

Set up kegs and a big barbecue- you can rent those oversized grills and have burgers and chicken going all day.

For entertainment, you might be able to rent one of those oversized white screens and projectors- play a good movie. Go PG-13 since you'll have lots of families there. Some ideas are Lord of the Rings, The Incredibles, Big Fish, Wallace and Grommit, Happy feet, Cars, RV, and Over the Hedge.
Make a stage by hand (get the other firemen to help) and have a roast- have people tell stories, and if you have the projector, people can do clips. You can get a kareoke machine and throw that into the mix if all else fails.

Music- go classics and 80's- most everyone likes that.

Have disposable cameras around, or get a designated person to take photos and create memory cds after the party.

Have a sign in/scrapbook- with a polaroid camera- and fun markers - so everyone writes a message to your dad.

Have fun!

If he's a dog person, you could give him a dalmation puppy as a gift/companion for his retirement.

I would make cupcakes with little plastic fire helmets on top, or a cake with a fire truck drawn on it (both of these things are pretty inexpensive, especially if you do them yourself.)

For music, just play what he likes. If he's into oldies, play oldies, same goes for classic rock, rap, or whatever!

Invitations you can make yourself on the computer, with little fire trucks, dalmation spots, flames around the edges...be creative.

Since you're having the party in July, I would say have a BBQ outside. See if his co-workers will lend you a ton of fire extinguishers as a joke, and have them all around the grill...

Thats all I can come up with at the mometn.

discover out who's terrific chum is on the job. i'm not conversing co-worker, i'm conversing terrific chum. Ask that terrific chum who he thinks your dad's 5 terrific pals are on the job. whilst your dad recovers from his surgical technique have your loved ones chip in and pay to your dad's "5 terrific pals" to take him out for dinner. Why might I say this you may ask your self. nicely after being a firefighter for thirty years and being a prime he knows each and all of the "pretend" people. it style of feels maximum of those "pretend" people choose to take place at retirement events and that they in fact destroy it. They lie approximately how great it replaced into to artwork with somebody just to extra desirable their own carrers or how sorely you will dad would be missed. What maximum of them are somewhat thinking is "i could not look ahead to him to retire, nows my danger to go up". backside line is your dad might have a much extra advantageous time with some somewhat close pals from the F.D., they share a particular bond and in all probability have been by using too lots to show jointly. it would be lots extra memorable to him.
