You breathe in through your nose, and the air goes down your trachea and into your lungs.

Air from BOTH nostrils enter the windpipe (trachea). At the "carina", the air goes to the left and right lungs.

Both nostrils connect to your throat which connects to your trachea which then split up... so it is not really divided that far back.
