Oy vay! Do not cut Challah, break it with your fingers and indulge. It is against mitzvah law to cut the Challah and a sign of bad manners and upbringing. Tear it with your hands and for goodness sake, do not butter it or dip it in the matzoh soup.

Normally challah is a long loaf, so natuarally you cut it on the short side, |||||||||||||||||| like cutting off one of those lines. If it is a round challah it doesnt matter how you cut it as long as the loaf doesnt get totally maimed.

Slice the loaf length-wise, then cut across making 1 to 1 1/2" slices.

Traditionally, at least to start, on Shabbat, pull off a piece. After hamotzi, slice as you wish (after Shabbat, it makes the BEST French... um, Yiddish toast).

I cut it in slices on the diagonal. It's prettier for presentation that way.

but if you can't rip it I would slice sideways so that they are normal bread slices
