Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, and other viral infections.

Let's see- what is the micro-organism causing your sore throat? It is an organism that is susceptible to amoxicillin, or is it one that is resistant? What are the resistance patterns in your geographical area?
If it IS an organism suscepticble then perhaps your doctor will prescribe a particular course of antibioticcs, possibly including amoxicillin, which need to be taken at a specific daily doses for your age/weight range for a specific period of time (much research has gone into this) in order to eradicate the bug and assure that it won't come back resistant and harder to kill, making you sicker the next time around.
SO- you need to see a doctor for this- he/she will know the bug/susceptibility/geographic patterns that you do not.
Are you considering taking some leftover amoxicillin in the medicine cabinet or from a friend? I hope not. Are you aware that medications degrade over time? Tetracycline degrades into a toxic substance that can kill you. Besides, you won't get the proper dose or amount of time, so while you might feel better for a day or two, it will come back with a vengeance. And bugs talk to each other, so you are not only creating a resistance strain inside you, you are passing it along to eveyone within sneezing and doorhandle reach- the bad gift that will keep on giving.
See your doctor and leave medicine to the doctors and pharmacy to the pharmacists. Thats why we go to school 6-8 years and have additional trainings and recertifications every year.

Amoxycillin is quite a normal antibiotic to be chosen for a sinus infection or a sore throat. However, if the throat infection is severe, then the drug of choice would be augmentin. This is because it combines amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor claculanate potassium. . Penicillins and beta-lactamase inhibitors are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by killing the bacteria or preventing their growth. The beta-lactamase inhibitor is added to the penicillin to protect the penicillin from certain substances (enzymes) that will destroy the penicillin before it can kill the bacteria.
Hope this helps
