The HEART is a muscular pump .It pumps blood (produced somewhere else eg, bone marrow etc) round the body at an average rate of 5 liters /minute from the time of birth to say an average lifespan of 70 years. Compute it and you will be astonished to learn that, up to now, the engineering world has never been able to duplicate !! More so - no smaintenance and no stoppage or week end off etc.

But with the natural aging process the muscle does weaken and, this may worsen when the muscle is deprived of nutrition through its blood supply.

When this happens the pumping action of the heart decreases by various degrees - Heart Failure.

Hope this answers your question.

As far as i know the heart doesn't make blood. The bloodcells are reproduced inside the bloodstream. The heart is more of a pump to keep the blood flow constant. The best way to keep your heart in good shape is to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Just walking 3 to 4 times a week is a great way to keep the heart healthy. Don't smoke, and don't take drugs except prerscribed by a physician. This will help your heart to stay healthy. Sorry but the old people are right on this subject. A baby asprin everyday is good for bloodflow. Aquire a taste for Wine. Just a few glasses of wine a week are good for the body. I hope this helps. Sorry if i sound like i'm preaching.

Your heart does not produce blood- new red blood cells come from the bone marrow, and are stimulated by erythropoitin in the kidneys to make more red cells.
As people age, their kidneys get slower, so their ability to make new red cells declines somewhat.
The heart just distributes it around to the body.

Over time, your heart muscle becomes a less efficient pump, working harder to pump the same amount of blood through your body.
